A useful conversation with a grower goes beyond "Is it natural?" Ask about actual practices, records and the limits of what can be claimed.

Ask practical questions

  • "Did you grow this crop here?" Understand its origin and who produced it.
  • "How do you decide what the soil needs?" Ask about observation, testing and inputs.
  • "What did you use for pests or disease?" Ask about the actual treatment, timing and precautions.
  • "What is the irrigation source, and how is its quality checked?" River water or groundwater is not automatically clean.
  • "How is the crop harvested, washed and stored?" Handling matters alongside cultivation.
  • "What does your organic or natural claim mean?" Ask what supports it, including certification details where claimed.
  • "Which variety is this, and why was it chosen?" Learn about the growing and eating qualities.

Listen for explanation, not the preferred label

Compost, manure and botanical preparations are not automatically risk-free. Hybrid seed does not establish poor farming practice, and an heirloom label does not establish food safety.

Useful answers describe what was done and why. A grower saying "we have not tested that" is more informative than an unsupported guarantee.
