Waterlogging After Rain: Finding the Cause Before Choosing a Fix
A diagnostic guide to separating surface runoff, compaction, poor outlets, high water tables and other causes of standing water.
A puddle immediately after rain and a persistently saturated root zone are not the same problem. First record how long the water remains and what happens to the plants.
Our experience with water constraints at Bholi reminds us to understand water before changing its route. A wet patch is not automatically wasted space or a reason to dig.
Investigate possible causes
- Runoff entering from a roof, path, road or neighbouring ground.
- A low point where water naturally gathers.
- Compacted or poorly structured soil.
- A slowly permeable layer beneath the surface.
- A high water table.
- A blocked, damaged or poorly positioned drainage outlet.
Several causes may occur together. Standing water alone does not establish that the soil is clay.
Make the next step proportionate
- Reduce unnecessary irrigation while soil remains saturated.
- Keep people and machinery off vulnerable wet ground.
- Check maintained outlets safely.
- Consider whether sensitive crops belong elsewhere.
- Get persistent problems assessed before installing drains, deep trenches or earthworks.
Gravel-filled holes do not guarantee an outlet. Cover crops cannot be relied upon to break every hard layer. Raised beds may help some crops, but do not remove the underlying cause or make contaminated floodwater safe.
