Livestock can connect vegetation, manure, compost, pasture and daily farm work. They also introduce a responsibility that continues every day of the year.

Plan before the animal arrives

  • Daily feed and clean water.
  • Secure, comfortable shelter.
  • Veterinary care and emergency access.
  • Skilled supervision.
  • Seasonal fodder availability.
  • Fencing, movement and manure handling.
  • Long-term operating cost.

Use the outputs carefully

Dung and bedding can become useful compost materials when handled correctly. Managed grazing may help in suitable areas, while uncontrolled access can damage young trees, compact wet soil or remove protective ground cover.

Start within the farm's capacity

Begin only with the number of animals the farm can support through difficult seasons as well as abundant ones. Livestock should be included because the farm can care for them properly—not simply because animals complete a rural picture.
