A few well-chosen herbs can make a small garden useful every day. Start with what you cook, then match those plants to the space available.

At 19AGRO, the same question guides a larger planting: will the conditions support the crop, and can someone care for it consistently?

Choose for the actual space

  • Watch morning and afternoon light rather than relying on a "sunny balcony" label.
  • Account for reflected heat and drying wind.
  • Choose containers with drainage and enough room for the mature plant.
  • Keep spreading herbs, such as mint, contained where needed.
  • Check balcony load and safe placement before adding heavy pots.

Do not treat all herbs alike

Rosemary and mint have different moisture needs. Coriander responds to season and temperature differently from lemongrass. Group plants by care requirements, not just their use in the kitchen.

  • Use a suitable container medium; one equal-parts recipe will not suit every material or herb.
  • Check moisture in the root zone before watering.
  • Let excess water drain rather than stand around roots.
  • Remember that porous pots may dry faster; no pot material stays cool in every exposure.
  • Harvest appropriately for the species, leaving enough healthy growth to recover.

Pinching growing tips can encourage branching in suitable herbs, but it does not stop every plant from flowering or bolting.

Diary note: Herb, position, watering needs and how often you actually harvest it.
