      "text": "1. Bring your goals - and be willing to adjust them"
    },

    },

      "text": "Sketch the boundary and mark north. Add buildings, gates, paths, fences, existing trees, cultivated areas, water sources, and power connections. Distinguish measured distances from estimates."

      "text": "Include the shape of the land: high points, low areas, slopes, rocky ground, and visible drainage lines. Note which direction slopes face and where walking or moving equipment is difficult."

      "text": "An aerial photograph can help you see the larger arrangement, but it cannot replace walking the site. Use the map to organise observations, then return to the ground to check them."

      "text": "3. Look for different conditions within the same property"
    },

      "text": "The weather report describes a wider area. Your plants experience the conditions immediately around them."

      "text": "These local differences are called microclimates. A sheltered courtyard, an exposed ridge, and a shaded patch beneath trees may offer very different growing conditions."

      "text": "Avoid copying a diagram's planting direction without checking its climate and location. A layout intended to capture warmth may not suit a place where summer heat is the main constraint."

      "text": "4. Follow water through the landscape"
    },

      "text": "When conditions are safe, inspect the land after rain. Mark where water enters, the routes it follows, where it stands, and where it leaves."

      "text": "Photograph the same places again later. Record how long puddles remain and whether you notice sediment deposits, erosion channels, or exposed roots."

      "text": "Also investigate your irrigation supply. How dependable is it during the driest period? What is known about its quality? How far must it travel to reach proposed growing areas?"

      "text": "5. Read living clues without jumping to conclusions"
    },

      "text": "Existing vegetation and animal activity can guide your questions."
    },

      "text": "Notice where plants establish naturally, where the same species grows differently, and where birds or other animals feed, shelter, or move. Photograph unfamiliar plants before deciding whether to remove them."

      "text": "Treat these signs as clues. One plant species does not conclusively identify a soil problem. A vigorous tree does not establish that nearby water is suitable for irrigation. Use local knowledge, repeat observations, and testing where needed."

    },

      "text": "Sectors describe influences arriving from outside the site: sunlight, winds, incoming water, and potential fire exposure. Mark their directions and seasonal patterns."

      "text": "Zones organise places according to how often people need to visit and care for them. A seedling nursery needing frequent attention should be convenient to reach. An area visited occasionally may sit farther from the main centre of activity."

    },
